The McKenzie approach was developed by a New Zealand physical therapist, Robin McKenzie in the 1960's. His method incorporates a step by step examination that identifies which movements cause a centralization of the patient's pain. That means which movements cause the pain to reduce in the extremity or peripherally. These specific movements allow the source of the pain to be identified and treated rather than the secondary symptoms. His method incorporates specific exercises and self care treatments for musculoskeletal problems of the neck and low back that allows the patient to eventually learn to manage their own pain.
